Muster – Drivers License

[Action Alert text]

Support SB 884 – Prevent unfair drivers’ license suspensions

If someone is behind in their child support payments, the State currently may automatically suspend that individual’s driver’s license – without determination of their current ability to pay – and, thus, may take away the ability to drive legally, the ability to get to a job, the ability to earn money to pay the needed child support.

This doesn’t make sense, especially for those who have low income.

SB 884 would help prevent such injustice in Maryland. The Senate already has passed this bill BUT the House Judiciary Committee will hear it only this Thursday, March 31. Time is short for that Committee and the House to pass this valuable bill.  Please help with the letter writing campaign.

How you can help.

Please send a message to your Delegate NOW urging them to prevent unfair driver’s license suspensions for those with too little income to pay the full amount of their child support.

As your constituent, I write to ask your support to prevent unfair drivers’ license suspensions for Marylanders with insufficient funds to pay child support.

The current bill contains an exception to permit license suspension when the Court previously has determined the individual is “voluntarily impoverished” – that is, when the individual actually has the ability to pay support, but deliberately has chosen to avoid paying.

I’m interested in your position on this issue. I would like to know if you will support this legislation. Or if you have issues and questions, please let me know.
